Special Meeting: Multinational Efforts to Promote Freedom of Religion or Belief, Featuring Dr. Irfan Abubakar

This September 17-19, 2015, the International Panel of Parliamentarians for Freedom of Religion or Belief (IPP-FoRB) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation will convene a first-of-its-kind joint meeting with parliamentarians, diplomats, UN officials, and civil society representatives to discuss ways to increase international cooperation to combat persecution and advance religious freedom for all.

The NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief is excited to announce that it will host a side event bringing civil society representatives together to discuss the proceedings and formulate suggestions on how governmental actors can effectively work with civil society to protect the rights to freedom of religion or belief. The side event will chaired by Committee president Michael De Dora, who will present the group’s recommendations back to the parliamentarians, diplomats, and UN officials.

This event will take place on Friday, September 18, from 3-5 p.m., at the Bahá’í International Community United Nations Office, located at 866 UN Plaza (Suite 120), New York, NY 10017. Only organizations in good standing with the NGO Committee or which registered for the IPP-FoRB meeting may attend this event. Registration is mandatory. This event will begin with a special guest presentation by Dr. Irfan Abubakar, Director of Center for the Study of Religion and Culture (CSRC) at Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic State University (UIN) in Jakarta, Indonesia. Dr. Abubakar has spoken widely on Islamic education, interreligious relations, and the role of Muslims in society. He is also a Lecturer at the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta since 2000, and lecturer of Ethics and Philosophy at the Swiss German University of Jakarta since 2008. Dr. Abubakar has a Graduate Degree from Department of Arabic Literature, State Institute for Islamic Studies, IAIN Jakarta, 1995, and a Master Degree in Religious Studies, Post-Graduate Program in IAIN Jakarta, 1999.
