The Crisis of Freedom of Religion or Belief in Burma

The UN NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief, in collaboration with Burma Task Force USA, will hold a panel event on February 22 focused on the state of freedom of religion or belief in Burma.

As described in the most recent report by Yanghee Lee, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar (Burma), there are serious ongoing human rights violations in the country — especially against religious minorities such as Rohingya Muslims, and those calling for democratic reforms.

Speakers will include:

  • Imam Malik Mujahid, founding chairman of Sound Vision Foundation, which produces educational content on Islam and Muslims, and chairman of Burma Task Force USA;
  • Ambassador Ufuk Gokcen, Permanent Observer of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation to the United Nations;
  • Aileen Thomson, program coordinator, International Center for Transitional Justice;
  • Chloe Breyer, executive director, Interfaith Center.

This meeting will take place Monday, February 22, 2016, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the Bahá’í International Community United Nations Office, located at 866 UN Plaza (Suite 120), New York, NY 10017.

RSVP is required. To RSVP, please email unforb@gmail.com
